TOKYO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Japan's nationwide unemployment rate came in at 2.4 percent in December 2024, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
The annual average unemployment rate for 2024 was 2.5 percent, also a 0.1-point improvement from the previous year.
The number of employed in December reached 68.11 million, an increase of 570,000 compared to the same month in 2023, marking 29 consecutive months of growth.
Meanwhile, the number of unemployed fell by 20,000 to 1.54 million, declining for the fifth straight month.
For the entire year of 2024, the average number of employed stood at 67.81 million, up 340,000 from the previous year, marking the fourth consecutive annual increase and the highest figure since comparable records began in 1953.
By industry, employment increased the most in the information and communications sector, rising by 140,000 to 2.92 million. The healthcare and welfare sector grew by 120,000 to 9.22 million, while the accommodation and food service sector saw a rise of 90,000 to 4.07 million.
The ministry noted that while involuntary job losses, such as layoffs, have decreased, employment has reached a record high, pledging to continue to monitor whether the trend of improvement continues. Enditem
