BISHKEK, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a law imposing fines for insults and slander in the media, on the Internet and on social networks, the official Kabar news agency reported on Friday.

Under the Code of Offenses of Kyrgyzstan, individuals face fines of about 230 U.S. dollars, while legal entities will be fined approximately 750 dollars.

The document states that penalties for slander are being introduced to protect public interests, the rights and freedoms of citizens, and information security.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan believes the new law will help reduce the threat of information attacks and safeguard the information space from external influence, the report said. Enditem
