JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Police in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province have rounded up 21 drug-addicted people recently and sent them to a rehabilitation center, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hamad said on Thursday.

The drug-addicted people were from the provincial capital Jalalabad and adjoining areas and were sent to the main rehabilitation center in Kabul, the official said.

The counter-narcotics police in Nangarhar province have in the past rounded up scores of drug-addicted people and sent them to rehabilitation centers for medical treatment, the official added.

Afghanistan, a country deeply affected by decades of conflict, is reportedly home to more than 3 million drug addicts. The Afghan caretaker government, which has outlawed poppy cultivation and drug trafficking, has committed to eradicating drug production and drug addiction and making the nation drug-free. Enditem
