VIENNA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Austria's tourism sector achieved its strongest year on record in 2024, with overnight stays reaching 154.29 million and surpassing pre-pandemic levels, Statistics Austria said on Friday.
The alpine nation saw a 2.1 percent increase in overnight stays compared to 2023, exceeding its previous record from 2019 by 1 percent, according to a statement from Statistics Austria.
Total visitor arrivals rose to 46.71 million in 2024, up 3.3 percent from the previous year.
Tobias Thomas, director-general of Statistics Austria, said international visitors were the main driver of the growth, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all overnight stays.
The western alpine provinces of Tyrol and Salzburg remained the most popular destinations, together making up more than half of all overnight stays.
Vienna led the recovery in city tourism, recording a historic 18.86 million overnight stays in 2024, a 9.3 percent increase from the previous year. Enditem
