JAKARTA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's western Aceh province on Friday without triggering large waves, according to the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.
The agency initially reported the magnitude of the quake as 6.2 before revising it downward.
The tremors occurred at 18:03 Jakarta time (1103 GMT), with the epicenter located 28 km southwest of Tapak Tuan, the capital of South Aceh regency, at a depth of 59 km beneath the seabed.
No tsunami warning was issued, as the tremors were not expected to generate giant waves.
Residents felt the tremors, but there were no preliminary reports of damage or casualties following the quake, Heni Nurmaini, an official from the emergency unit of the provincial disaster management agency told Xinhua.
Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, is frequently struck by earthquakes due to its location on the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire." Enditem
