BRUSSELS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The European Union's (EU) Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah crossing started on Friday and will last till the end of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, the European Commission has confirmed.

The civil mission began today "at the request of Palestinians and Israelis," Commission spokesman Anouar El Anouni told reporters at a press briefing.

"There will be work with the Palestinian personnel at the borders, helping those who need medical attention," he said, adding that further details cannot be disclosed for security reasons.

Kaja Kallas, the bloc's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said on X that the mission "will support Palestinian border personnel and allow the transfer of individuals out of Gaza, including those who need medical care."

The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was enforced on Jan. 19. Its first phase will last for 42 days. Enditem
