TOKYO, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The total number of overnight stays at hotels and inns across Japan reached an estimated 55.82 million in December 2024, marking a 6.3-percent increase from the same month the previous year, data from Japan Tourism Agency showed.

The figure marked the highest ever recorded for December.

In breakdown, foreign visitor stays totaled 15.29 million, a 21.9-percent surge from the previous year, making it the second-highest monthly figure on record.

Domestic stays by Japanese travelers reached 40.53 million, up 1.4 percent from the previous year.

The agency attributed the surge to rising travel demand, with more foreign tourists visiting Japan during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. Enditem
