LONDON, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Arsenal maintained its title chase with a resounding 5-1 victory over Manchester City at home on Sunday to stay six points behind Liverpool. The result further exposed City's struggles, coming just 10 days after its clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring in the second minute as Pep Guardiola's side made another costly error trying to play out from the back. Arsenal dominated the first half, but a failure to convert chances nearly proved expensive when Erling Haaland headed City level in the 55th minute following an excellent cross from Savinho. However, Arsenal regained the lead just 38 seconds later when Thomas Partey's shot deflected into the net.

Young defender Myles Lewis-Skelly made it 3-1 with a curling shot after cutting in from the left, before Kai Havertz added a fourth on the break. Another youngster, Ethan Nwaneri, rounded off a crushing win in injury time.

On Saturday, Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory away to an in-form Bournemouth, extending its lead at the top. Mohamed Salah was the hero, scoring a first-half penalty before sealing the win with a trademark left-footed finish in the 75th minute, ending Bournemouth's 11-game unbeaten run.

Nottingham Forest responded emphatically to last week's 5-0 defeat to Bournemouth by thrashing Brighton 7-0 at home in a stunning attacking display.

Lewis Dunk opened the floodgates with an own goal, before Morgan Gibbs-White doubled the lead in the 25th minute. Chris Wood stole the show with a hat-trick, continuing his prolific season, while Anthony Elanga provided three assists. Neco Williams and Jota Silva rounded off the rout.

Fulham came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory away to Newcastle United. Jacob Murphy gave Newcastle the lead in the 37th minute, but second-half goals from Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Munoz completed Fulham's comeback.

Manchester United confirmed the signing of Danish defender Patrick Dorgu, a promising young left-back from Lecce, ahead of its match against Crystal Palace. However, United's defensive frailties were once again exposed, as Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice to secure a 2-0 win for Palace.

Mateta's first goal came in the 64th minute when he turned in a rebound after Maxence Lacroix's header was tipped onto the bar. He then sealed the victory in the final minute, converting a low cross.

Tottenham ended a poor run of form with a 2-0 victory away to Brentford, who continue to struggle at home. Spurs got lucky with the opener when Son Heung-min's corner deflected off Vitaly Janelt for an own goal. Son was also instrumental in the second, setting up Pape Matar Sarr, who flicked the ball past Hakon Valdimarsson.

Everton continued its resurgence under Sean Dyche, winning 4-0 at home against Leicester City to make it three consecutive victories.

Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton ahead within 10 seconds, before Beto doubled the lead in the sixth minute to leave Leicester reeling. Beto then added another just before halftime, and Iliman Ndiaye wrapped up the win in stoppage time.

Ipswich Town's fight for Premier League survival took a major hit with a 2-1 home defeat to rock-bottom Southampton.

Joe Aribo put the Saints ahead in the 21st minute, but Liam Delap equalized before halftime with a brilliant solo run. Ipswich pushed for a winner but was punished late on when Paul Onuachu struck in the 87th minute to give Southampton all three points.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had a positive day, not only securing a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa but also seeing Matheus Cunha sign a new contract to commit his future to the club. Enditem
