COLOMBO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's navy seized an Indian fishing boat and apprehended 10 Indian fishermen while they were poaching in Sri Lankan waters, the navy said in a statement on Monday.

The fishermen were arrested during a special operation in the sea area south of Mannar in northern Sri Lanka on Sunday night, the navy said.

The navy said the boat and the fishermen were handed over to fisheries officials for legal action.

The Sri Lankan navy has apprehended over 70 Indian fishermen so far in 2025, according to navy data.

The navy said it conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing boats, taking into account the impact of those practices on the livelihood of local fishermen. Enditem
