ISLAMABAD, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation dropped to 2.4 percent in January 2025, down from 4.1 percent in the previous month and a staggering 28.3 percent in January 2024, official statistics revealed on Monday.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI inflation in January 2025 increased by a marginal 0.2 percent, compared to a 0.1 percent rise in December 2024, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said in a statement.

The CPI inflation in urban areas fell to 2.7 percent year-on-year in January 2025, down from 4.4 percent in December 2024 and a sharp decline from 30.2 percent in January 2024.

On a monthly basis, urban inflation increased by 0.2 percent, rebounding from a negative change of 0.1 percent in the previous month.

Rural inflation also saw a similar downward trend, dropping to 1.9 percent year-on-year in January 2025 from 3.6 percent in December 2024 and 25.7 percent in January 2024.

The month-on-month rural inflation recorded a 0.2 percent increase, slightly lower than the 0.3 percent rise in December 2024.

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI), which reflects the prices of essential goods, decreased to 0.7 percent year-on-year in January 2025, a significant drop from 4.2 percent a month earlier and a sharp decline from 36.2 percent in January 2024, the PBS said.

On a month-on-month basis, SPI inflation decreased 1.4 percent, reversing from a 0.8 percent rise in December 2024.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the lowest inflation rate in nine years, which reflects the positive impact of the government's economic policies and interventions, according to a statement by the Prime Minister's Office.

"The reduction in food prices has brought significant improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens," he said. Enditem
