KAMPALA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's Ministry of Health on Monday reported two new confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease in the national capital of Kampala, where the outbreak has already killed one health worker.
Two family members of the first index case under monitoring at the isolation unit of Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala tested positive for the Sudan Ebola virus disease (SVD) on Sunday, Emanuel Ainebyoona, spokesperson for the ministry, told reporters here. This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to three in the current Ebola outbreak in the East African country.
The health ministry declared an Ebola outbreak on Jan. 30 after a 32-year-old male nurse working at the hospital succumbed to the SVD. As of Monday, 234 contacts of the deceased have been identified, according to the ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Uganda's previous SVD outbreak started in September 2022 and ended in January 2023, with 164 cases and 77 deaths. According to the WHO, case fatality rates of the SVD have varied from 41 percent to 100 percent in past outbreaks. Enditem
