Police destory 26 tons of illegal drugs in S. Afghanistan

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The police have seized more than 26 tons of illegal drugs during a series of operations in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province and burned publicly, provincial police spokesman Ezatullah Haqqani said Tuesday.

The contraband, which includes opium poppy, hashish and the objects used in manufacturing heroin, was discovered during several operations launched recently in Bahramcha district on Monday, the official asserted.

Like other parts of the once-poppy growing Afghanistan, the district would be cleared from the drug menace, the official pointed out.

The Afghan caretaker government, which has banned poppy cultivation, drug processing and trafficking, has vowed to fight the menace until the country becomes a drug-free nation. Enditem
