ROME, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The son of U.S. President Donald Trump is the subject of an official complaint lodged against him on Tuesday for allegedly hunting a protected species of duck in Italy in December 2024.

Trump Junior is suspected of killing the birds while hunting in Venice lagoon, northeast Italy, according to the regional councilor who reported the case to the police.

Councilor Andrea Zanoni explained on social media that he has filed a criminal complaint to the Forest Protection Command of Carabinieri military police force in the Veneto region, where Venice is located.

The local politician and environmentalist said a video produced by Field Ethos and published online by Trump Jr. showed the man and other people shooting down various ducks in the Venice lagoon.

In his post, the councilor said that some of the species hunted were protected birds, and therefore, if confirmed, this behavior is a criminal act under the country's penal code, as well as an administrative violation.

The alleged crime took place in an area called Campagna Lupia, which is part of a nature reserve south of Venice, in December last year.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera retrieved and republished the video, in which Trump Jr. could be seen shooting the ducks. Later in the video, several dead waterfowl can be seen lying around him, including ducks.

Zanoni said he had identified at least one ruddy shelduck among the dead birds. These are protected under both the European Union (EU) Birds Directive and Italian wildlife protection laws.

The councilor has lodged a petition with Veneto regional government, asking it to consider possible sanctions against those who authorized the hunting company that organized the field mission.

A second petition was also lodged with the national government to discuss the case and provide more information. Enditem
