KHARTOUM, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Tuesday announced a significant advancement in Al Kamlin and its surrounding villages in central Sudan while sources said it has regained control of the city.
The SAF posted videos on its official Facebook page showing citizens celebrating its advancement in Al Kamlin, 65 km south of the capital Khartoum and the last stronghold of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Gezira State.
A caption accompanying the videos noted "the military's major advancement" in the city and the "cleaning" of the city from the RSF.
Meanwhile, independent news portal Sudan Tribune, citing Abdul-Moneim Abdul-Basit, commander of the SAF's mobile unit in Sennar, said the SAF "liberated" and retook control of Al Kamlin on Tuesday after days of fierce battles, and "is determined to advance towards Khartoum."
A military source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the SAF is advancing north from Gezira to encircle the RSF which is mainly positioned south of Khartoum.
"If the recapture of Al Kamlin is confirmed, it will mean complete control of Gezira State by the army," the source said.
Also on Tuesday, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander of the SAF, said during a visit to the East Nile area in Khartoum State that the SAF "will fight until the RSF is completely defeated."
According to a statement by the council, Al-Burhan said the SAF is approaching the Soba Bridge, a key bridge east of Khartoum linking the East Nile area with South Khartoum, currently the main stronghold of the RSF.
Recently, the armed confrontations between the SAF and the RSF have been escalating on three fronts, the capital Khartoum, the Gezira State, and around El Fasher city in western Sudan. The SAF is reportedly making key progress in Gezira State and Khartoum State.
Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the two parties since mid-April 2023, which claimed at least 29,683 lives and displaced over 15 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to the latest estimates by international organizations. Enditem
