S. Korea's imported car sale grows in January

SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sales grew in double digits last month due to strong demand for German luxury models, industry data showed Wednesday.

The number of imported vehicles sold here jumped 16.4 percent from a year earlier to 15,229 in January, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

German automaker BMW ranked first in terms of automotive sales here among foreign companies by selling 5,960 units last month.

Another German carmaker Mercedes-Benz came next with the sale of 3,790 units, followed by Japanese automaker Lexus with 1,126 units, Volvo with 1,033 units, Porsche with 644 units and Toyota with 430 units.

The number of European models sold here came to 12,697 last month, accounting for 83.4 percent of the total. U.S. and Japanese brands recorded market shares of 5.2 percent and 11.4 percent each. Enditem
