COLOMBO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a proposal to import coconut kernels and dried coconut pieces with coconut (non-copra) husks equivalent to 200 million coconuts for coconut oil production, according to a statement released by the government information department on Wednesday.

The decision was made as insufficient domestic coconut production has negatively impacted industries that rely on coconut as a raw material, the statement said.

Secretaries from the Ministries of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development and Plantation and Community Infrastructure have been assigned to oversee the import process, the statement said.

Guidelines for importing chilled coconut kernels, dried coconut pieces with husks, coconut milk, coconut milk powder, and desiccated coconut have been jointly prepared by relevant departments. Enditem
