NAIROBI, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Wednesday launched its five-year strategic plan to empower persons with disabilities.
Sally Nduta, chief executive officer of the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), the national umbrella body representing organizations of persons with disabilities, told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that the strategic plan 2025-2029 provides a roadmap to guide the country to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
"The plan will ensure that persons with disabilities in Kenya overcome challenges such as limited access to essential services as well as under-representation in decision-making spaces," Nduta said.
She added that the strategic plan also outlines measures to ensure that persons with disabilities achieve progress toward attaining the highest attainable standards of health outcomes.
Eric Ngondi, chairperson of the UDPK, revealed that the strategic plan is designed to address the stigma faced by persons with disability in society through advocacy campaigns that promote inclusive communities.
He noted that to tackle the disproportionate risks faced by persons with disabilities, the strategic plan will promote the integration of disability-inclusive practices into climate actions, disaster preparedness, and humanitarian response strategies. Enditem
