PARIS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou survived a no-confidence vote in the French National Assembly on Wednesday evening after pushing through France's 2025 budget bill using his special constitutional powers on Monday.

According to results announced by Yael Braun-Pivet, speaker of the French National Assembly, only 128 deputies voted in favor of the no-confidence motion initiated by the hard left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), far below the 289 votes required for it to pass.

On Monday, Bayrou invoked Article 49.3 of the French Constitution to adopt the 2025 state budget bill without requiring a parliamentary vote. In response, LFI immediately announced its intention to introduce a no-confidence motion against him.

This was the first no-confidence vote against Bayrou since the formation of his government on Dec. 23, 2024. The motion followed his general policy speech on Jan. 15.

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Bayrou as prime minister on Dec. 13 after Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote. Enditem
