KHARTOUM, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Wednesday said it has made significant gains in the capital Khartoum after heavy fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
"Our forces have made significant progress in Khartoum, securing the entire area of Al-Rumaila, a medical depot, an industrial area, and the state's currency mint," SAF's spokesman Nabil Abdallah said in a statement.
"Our forces continue to deal heavy blows to the militia on all fronts and around the clock," he added.
However, the RSF denied any such advances by the army.
"Today (Wednesday), the RSF forces successfully eliminated army units and their allied brigades as they attempted to infiltrate and advance near the ammunition corps near the industrial area in southern Khartoum," El Basha Tabig, advisor to the RSF Commander, tweeted on social platform X, adding that RSF forces had destroyed two army tanks and several combat vehicles.
Intense clashes are ongoing in western, central, and southern Khartoum between the SAF and the RSF, with the latter still holding control over the majority of these areas.
According to a military source, SAF units are stationed around the armored corps in the Al-Shajara area, southwest of Khartoum, as they attempt to advance northward toward central Khartoum.
"The army is trying to reach the main Al-Ghaba Street to open a crucial corridor towards central Khartoum and connect with a mobile force from southern Khartoum and another force stationed in the strategic Al-Muqran area," the source told Xinhua.
On Jan. 25, the SAF announced the completion of the first phase of its military operation in Khartoum, after linking forces from Omdurman and Khartoum North with units positioned near the Signal Corps, southern of Bahri city, north of Khartoum.
Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the two parties since mid-April 2023, which claimed at least 29,683 lives and displaced over 15 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to the latest estimates by international organizations. Enditem
