KABUL, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police have apprehended nine alleged drug smugglers and discovered more than 40 kg of illegal drugs and objects used in manufacturing heroin from their possessions, the Afghan caretaker government's Ministry of Interior Affairs said on Thursday.
A statement of the ministry posted on its X account said that police discovered 27 kg of opium poppy in the western Nimroz province and arrested an individual on the charge of involvement in the drug business.
Police also detained a drug smuggler in the eastern Paktia province and found 9 kg of hashish in his possession. Similarly, police in the western Herat province arrested seven alleged smugglers and seized 4 kg of opium poppy along with a good quantity of objects used in manufacturing heroin from their possessions, the statement said.
In the drive against illegal drugs, the Afghan counter-narcotics police set on fire 26 tons of narcotics in the southern Helmand province on Tuesday.
The Afghan caretaker government, which has outlawed poppy cultivation, drug production and drug trafficking, has vowed to fight the drug menace until the once-poppy-growing Afghanistan becomes a drug-free nation. Enditem
