MADRID, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Las Palmas captain Kirian Rodriguez on Thursday announced that he will have to miss the rest of the football season after suffering a relapse of the cancer he was treated for in 2022.
The 28-year-old had recovered after being diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2022, but on Thursday, he explained that the disease had returned in a press conference where he was supported by club president Miguel Angel Ramirez and other club officials.
"A month ago, at the start of January, the numbers in the tests were not adequate and doctors carried out other tests on me," explained Rodriguez.
"I was having tests every six months, but with the passing of time in January, the blood levels were worrying... I have cancer again and I have to stop (playing football) for six months to fight this disease again and I will have to undergo chemotherapy," he added.
"I need to stop and fight, but I hope to be here and see you all again, and I am sure it will be in the first division," he added.
Rodriguez's news saw most of the clubs in La Liga send him messages of support, including Real Madrid and Athletic Club Bilbao, whose central defender Yeray Alvarez also overcame two battles against cancer earlier in his career. Enditem
