LIMA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Former goalkeeper Oscar Ibanez has been appointed interim manager of Peru's national team, the South American country's football federation said on Thursday.
The 57-year-old replaces Uruguayan Jorge Fossati, who was sacked in January after a disappointing run of results.
Ibanez will be in charge of the Blanquirroja for their FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia in Lima on March 20 and Venezuela in Maturin five days later.
"He is taking on this challenge with great optimism and commitment," the federation said in a statement.
Peru is currently last in the 10-team South American qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup with just one win from 12 matches.
Ibanez, who was born in Argentina but gained Peruvian citizenship in 1998, earned 50 caps for his adopted country. His managerial career has included spells in charge of Peruvian top-flight clubs Real Garcilaso, Cienciano and Comerciantes Unidos. Enditem
