NEW DELHI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- India's main ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday won the Delhi Assembly elections held on Feb. 5, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which had been ruling the Indian capital for nearly 12 years.

According to the website of the Election Commission of India (ECI), out of the total 70 Assembly constituencies, the BJP's candidates had either won or were ahead of their rivals in 48 Assembly constituencies.

On the other hand, the AAP candidates had either won or were leading in only 22 Assembly constituencies. Five years ago, the AAP had won 62 Assembly constituencies.

The ECI was expected to officially announce the final results by late evening.

The biggest setback for the AAP was its national convenor and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal losing in the New Delhi Assembly constituency. Former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and a couple of ministers belonging to the AAP lost the elections too.

The country's main opposition party the Indian National Congress was not in a position to win even a single Assembly constituency, showed the online trends by the ECI's website.

This would be after a gap of 27 years when the BJP would be ruling the Indian capital. Enditem
