ISLAMABAD, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and nine others injured in a firing incident in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, police sources confirmed.
The attack happened at about 8:50 a.m. local time (0350 GMT) when unidentified militants opened fire on a peace committee's office in the Bannu district of the province, sources from the district's police told Xinhua.
The peace committee members retaliated, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted approximately 20 minutes, following which the attackers fled the scene, the sources added.
The injured were shifted to a military hospital by the rescue teams.
Security forces have increased patrols and launched an investigation into the incident.
