KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities laid down the foundation stone of a township in northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Sunday.

The proposed township, to be constructed on 35 acres of land within two years and costing 1.5 billion afghani (20.28 million U.S. dollars), would have modern facilities, including markets, schools, and health centers, the head of the construction company, Mawlawi Abdul Ghafoor Shahidzoi, said in his opening remarks.

Launching the project would also create jobs for hundreds of people, he said.

In similar initiatives, the Afghan administration opened a 100-bed hospital in western Nimroz province and started work on four incomplete power projects in neighboring Herat province.

As part of the efforts to rebuild war-torn Afghanistan, the Afghan caretaker government has launched numerous development and infrastructure projects, calling on national and international enterprises to invest and create jobs for the poverty-stricken people. Enditem
