SYDNEY, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A man has been critically injured in a brawl involving up to 40 armed people in western Sydney.

Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said on Monday that officers were called to reports of a brawl "involving between 30 and 40 people armed with knives, machetes and baseball bats" at a public park 18 km west of central Sydney at about 5:40 p.m. on Sunday.

Officers arrived at the scene in the suburb of South Granville, causing the group to disperse on foot and in cars.

"Police located a 28-year-old man with serious head injuries," a NSW Police statement said.

Ambulance crews were sent to the scene and treated the man before taking him to a local hospital in a critical condition.

Shortly after, police arrested a 29-year-old man in a nearby street. He was taken to a police station and charged with affray and carrying a knife in a public place. Enditem
