KIGALI, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has launched an intensified campaign to combat corruption in the judiciary, with Chief Justice Domitilla Mukantaganzwa highlighting disciplinary actions taken against judicial staff involved in graft.

Speaking at the launch of Anti-Corruption Week on Monday in the capital, Kigali, Mukantaganzwa said that corruption remains a major obstacle to delivering fair justice.

"Between 2020 and 2024, the judiciary penalized judges, court clerks, and other judicial staff for corruption. Two court clerks and a judge were imprisoned," Mukantaganzwa said.

She urged citizens to take an active role in the fight against corruption by reporting bribery attempts and providing feedback on judicial services. Poor service delivery, she said, often creates conditions for corruption to thrive.

At the same event, Jeannot Ruhunga, secretary general of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, revealed that authorities had investigated 4,437 corruption-related cases over the past five years, involving more than 9,000 individuals. Additionally, 56 prosecutors were dismissed on suspicion of corruption, with some facing imprisonment.

According to the Rwanda Bribery Index 2024 by Transparency International Rwanda, bribery prevalence in Rwanda fell to 18.5 percent in 2024 from 22 percent in 2023.

Anti-Corruption Week aims to raise public awareness and strengthen accountability measures to ensure a transparent and corruption-free judiciary. Enditem
