MADRID, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The United States (US) overtook Algeria as the largest exporter of natural gas to Spain in January 2025, according to data published in the Enagas bulletin on Tuesday.

Published by the Spanish energy infrastructure, the bulletin shows that Spain imported 10,454 gigawatt hours (GWh) of liquified natural gas (LNG) from the US in the first month of 2025.

This accounted for 29.3 percent of all the natural gas imported by Spain in the month, and an 11 percent increase on the amount of LNG Spain imported from the US in January 2024. It was also the first time the US has been Spain's main provider of natural gas since November 2023.

The steep increase in LNG gas imports by Spain from the US coincides with the start of the conflict in Ukraine, when Spain attempted to reduce imports of Russian gas. However, Enagas said that in 2023, Russian exports to Spain reached 72,690 GWh, up 35 percent on 2022.

January saw Algeria supply Spain with 10,119 GWh of LNG via the Medgaz pipeline which reaches Spain from North Africa. This was equivalent to 28.4 percent of the total amount of gas Spain imported in January.

Russia supplied gas equivalent to 6,464 GWh in January, accounting for 18.1 percent of Spain's total gas imports, while Nigeria ranked as the fourth-largest supplier. Enditem
