VALLETTA, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Office of the President of Malta issued a warning on Wednesday regarding fraudulent social media profiles impersonating President Myriam Spiteri Debono.

In an official statement, the office cautioned that fake accounts operating on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram have been misusing the President's name and images. Additionally, some of these fraudulent pages have employed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create deepfake videos, falsely attributing statements and footage to Spiteri Debono.

Some of these deceptive sites have reportedly attempted to lure individuals into fraudulent financial schemes, particularly involving cryptocurrency investments. The rise of AI-generated content and deepfake technology has heightened the risk of misinformation, making it increasingly challenging for users to differentiate between genuine and fraudulent content.

"The Office of the President disassociates itself from any such content aimed at attracting people to financial investments, mainly crypto, that are fake and may lead to people falling victim to scams," the statement read. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant against such scams. Enditem
