MOSCOW, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A Russian citizen imprisoned in the United States will return to Russia in the coming days, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.
As a result of the contacts between Russian and U.S. officials, one Russian citizen detained in the United States was released, Peskov said.
The spokesman said that the release of U.S. citizen Marc Fogel and the upcoming return of the Russian citizen were possible due to the intensified contacts between Russian and U.S. officials.
"Such agreements are the result of very meticulous work and negotiations," Peskov said.
He said that while they are "unlikely to become a turning point," they are nonetheless important steps in building mutual trust between the two countries, which is currently at its lowest point.
U.S. citizen Marc Fogel, who was convicted in Russia for drug smuggling and possession, was released to the United States, Fogel's lawyer Dmitry Ovsyannikov told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
Earlier, U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, visited Russia to negotiate Fogel's return. CNN previously reported that Fogel had worked for nearly a decade as a history teacher at the Anglo-American School in Moscow. Enditem
