SINGAPORE, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Fires involving active mobility devices in Singapore surged by 21.8 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to a report released by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on Thursday.

The report revealed 67 such fires in 2024, up from 55 in 2023, noting that active mobility device fires remain an area of concern, especially for those that occur at residential premises.

The overall number of fires across the country also saw a slight increase of 1.8 percent, reaching a total of 1,990 cases in 2024.

The SCDF, in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), conducted investigations which pointed to several key factors behind these fires. Most incidents were attributed to the charging of devices with non-original components, including modifications to batteries and electrical circuits, as well as irresponsible charging practices.

The LTA further warned that some of these fires have caused property damage, injuries, and even fatalities.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the authority urged the public to avoid tampering with a device's electrical components, installing third-party parts, or attempting self-repairs. Enditem
