Singapore sees surge in arrests for marriage-of-convenience offenses in 2024

SINGAPORE, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Singapore witnessed a "sharp increase" in arrests related to marriage-of-convenience offenses in 2024, with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Friday reporting a rise from eight arrests in 2023 to 41 in 2024.

The authority attributed the surge to enhanced enforcement measures aimed at investigating and disrupting such arrangements, many of which involve criminal syndicates. Some of the investigations were triggered by public tip-offs, it said in its annual statistics.

In recent months, many foreign women have sought to secure legal residency by marrying Singaporean men, with a number of these unions reportedly arranged by criminal networks, according to local media. Enditem
