NEW DELHI, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A paramilitary trooper belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) killed his two colleagues and wounded eight others before taking his own life inside a stationed camp in the restive northeastern state of Manipur, police said Friday.

The fratricide broke out Thursday night at a CRPF camp in Lamsang in Imphal West district, about 7 km from west of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.

"In an unfortunate incident, last night a suspected case of fratricide happened inside a CRPF camp in Lamsang under Imphal West District wherein one CRPF man opened fire killing two of his colleagues on the spot and wounding eight others," a police official said. "Later, he also committed suicide by using his service weapon."

The motive behind the fratricide was not immediately known, police said.

"It is a matter of investigation and police have initiated a probe into it," the official said.

Manipur has been on edge since May 3, 2023, when large-scale violence broke out in the state during a tribal protest over the inclusion of the non-tribal Meitei community for a scheduled tribe status -- designated for disadvantaged socio-economic groups which gives them reservations in education and government jobs.

The ethnic clashes between the majority Meitei group and the tribal Kuki minority have so far seen 258 people dead and over 60,000 displaced. Enditem
