JAKARTA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Ministry of Industry will set a maximum limit on emissions for companies manufacturing cement, fertilizers, steel, and paper, while encouraging them to participate in carbon emissions trading, an official announced on Thursday.
Apit Pria Nugraha, head of the Green Industry Center at the ministry, explained that these four industries were selected because their manufacturing processes generate the highest levels of emissions, which are challenging to reduce.
He added that the new regulations would be mandatory for companies producing these four types of goods.
Nugraha noted that companies emitting below the allowable limit could receive financial compensation by selling their reduced carbon emissions.
However, companies exceeding the emission limit would be required to pay for their excess emissions by purchasing carbon credits from companies that emit below the limit.
The official also mentioned that the initiative would later be expanded to five other sectors including automotive. Enditem
