NAIROBI, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenya earned 108 billion shillings (around 835 million U.S. dollars) from its flower exports in 2024 compared to 827 million dollars in 2023, a trade association said on Friday.

Clement Tulezi, chief executive officer of the Kenya Flower Council, told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the European Union (EU) accounted for 70 percent of the foreign exchange revenues.

"Other key export markets included Britain, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Japan," Tulezi said.

Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicated that the flower sector is one of the leading sources of foreign exchange earnings alongside diaspora remittances, tourism, tea, and coffee.

Tulezi observed that China absorbed two percent of Kenya's flower exports in 2024 and has the potential to become a major importer of flowers from the East African nation.

He noted that the biggest challenge for the flower sector is the rising cost of air freight and labor.

He added the Red Sea tensions have increased the cost of the transportation of flowers to the EU. Enditem
