BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Local favorite Francisco Cerundolo recovered from a set down to beat German top seed Alexander Zverev and advance to the semifinals of the ATP 250 Argentina Open on Friday.
Fifth-seed Cerundolo made 71% of his first serves and saved five of seven break points to prevail 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on the outdoor clay of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
"To be able to beat him here in Buenos Aires, in my hometown, with my home crowd is amazing. It's probably one of the best feelings I've ever had," the 26-year-old said.
The result made Cerundolo the first Argentine to beat a top-two player since Diego Schwartzman overcame Rafael Nadal at the 2020 Masters 1000 event in Rome.
The world No. 28 will face Spain's Pedro Martinez for a place in the final.
In other matches on Friday, Brazil's Joao Fonseca outlasted Argentine Mariano Navone 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 and Serb Laslo Djere defeated Thiago Wild, also of Brazil, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Enditem
