LOME, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Togo held its first-ever Senate elections on Saturday, marking a significant step toward establishing the Senate and the full operation of the bicameral system.
In 2002, Togo amended its constitution to introduce a bicameral parliament consisting of the National Assembly and the Senate. However, the Senate has not been established until now.
The Senate elections will select 41 senators from 92 candidates.
According to the law, the Togolese Senate consists of 61 seats, 41 of which will be elected by regional and municipal senators, while the remaining 20 will be appointed by the Togolese president. Senators will serve a six-year term and can be re-elected.
Togo held municipal Senate elections in 2019, electing 1,527 municipal senators. In 2024, the country conducted its first regional Senate elections, electing 179 regional senators. Enditem
