ADDIS ABABA -- The 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of the Heads of State and Government on Saturday elected Djibouti's Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf as the new AU Commission chairperson.

Youssouf, elected for the 2025-2028 term, will succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat, the outgoing chair and former Chadian prime minister, who has completed his two-term, eight-year tenure leading the 55-member continental bloc. (Ethiopia-African Union Commission-Chairperson)

ROME -- One man was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a bakery in northern Italy's Milan on Saturday, according to Italy's ANSA news agency.

The incident occurred in the late afternoon in Piazzale Gambara, where two men got shot and were sent to the hospital. One of the victims was confirmed dead by doctors shortly after arrival, the other was in serious condition, ANSA reported. (Italy-Milan-Shooting)

VIENNA -- A 14-year-old boy was killed and four other people injured in a knife attack in the southern Austrian city of Villach on Saturday, police said.

A man randomly stabbed passers-by around 4 p.m. in downtown Villach, Austrian broadcaster ORF quoted local police as saying.

The suspected attacker, a 23-year-old Syrian, was arrested shortly after the incident. (Austria-Accident)

ISLAMABAD -- Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has been detected in environmental samples collected from eight districts of Pakistan between Jan. 15 and Jan. 24, 2025, the National Institute of Health (NIH) said in a statement on Saturday.

According to the latest data released by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the NIH, sewage samples collected from four districts of the country's southwest Balochistan province and three districts of northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province tested positive for WPV1 as of Friday.
