SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will increase penalties for speeding violations starting Jan. 1, 2026, in response to a sharp rise in cases last year, Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam announced on Saturday.

Speaking at the Traffic Police Road Safety Day in northern Singapore, Shanmugam revealed that the country recorded 192,000 speeding violations in 2024, the highest in a decade.

The year also saw nearly 7,200 traffic accidents, resulting in 142 fatalities. Of these, 46 were caused by speeding, marking a 44 percent increase from 2023.

While overall accident numbers remain lower than pre-pandemic levels, Shanmugam cautioned that the way they are going up is of concern. Enditem
