LUSAKA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's power utility, Zesco Limited, signed agreements with 29 independent power producers on Tuesday to generate 332 megawatts of solar power, marking a significant step towards diversifying the country's energy mix.

The independent power producers are expected to undertake 56 projects across all the country's 10 provinces, with operations expected to begin between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

The power producers will implement their projects under three categories: the presidential solar initiative, the microgenerator scheme, and the developer-initiated program, according to the agreements.

Justin Loongo, managing director of Zesco Limited, said the signing of the agreement signifies Zambia's commitment to diversifying its electricity generation and enhancing energy security.

"These developments are not just about expanding our electricity supply but also about empowering businesses and communities, fostering economic growth, and ensuring a cleaner and more resilient electricity sector," he said during the signing ceremony.

Loongo also highlighted the rigorous selection process for the chosen projects, ensuring that only the most technically and financially viable proposals were selected. The involvement of private developers, he added, demonstrates Zambia's ability to attract investment, harness private capital, and create a vibrant market for independent producers.

Zambia's Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote said the new projects will contribute to grid stability, reduce reliance on hydroelectric power, and ensure a secure, sustainable, and sufficient national electricity supply. He also shared that the government aims to increase electricity access from 53.6 percent to 100 percent by 2030, encouraging further investment in the sector to accelerate universal electricity access.

Hydroelectric generation currently accounts for about 80 percent of Zambia's electricity needs. However, the country is facing an electricity deficit due to lower-than-usual water levels in its hydro plants, resulting from poor rains during the 2023/2024 rainy season. Enditem
