TRIPOLI, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The number of unidentified bodies recovered in the southeastern Libyan city of Kufra has risen to 64, the Emergency Department of the Libyan Health Ministry said Tuesday.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the department said its field team continued working in the south of Kufra from Thursday to Monday, until the completion of the recovery, analysis and reburial of "the bodies of illegal migrants" in "a place designated for them."

On Saturday, the Libyan Forensic Police announced the recovery of 59 unidentified bodies in Kufra, without revealing their identities.

On Feb. 9, the Attorney General's office said security services in Kufra had freed 76 migrants detained by a criminal gang and recovered 28 bodies of migrants buried near the detention site.

Because of the insecurity and chaos in the country since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, many migrants, mostly Africans, chose to cross the Mediterranean to Europe from Libya. Enditem
