JAKARTA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's eastern Maluku province early Wednesday, but it did not trigger large waves, the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency reported.

The agency initially recorded the quake's magnitude as 5.9 before revising it downward.

The tremors occurred at 6:39 a.m. Jakarta time on Wednesday (2339 GMT Tuesday), according to the agency.

The epicenter was located 68 km southeast of Seram Bagian Timur Regency at a depth of 20 km beneath the sea floor. No tsunami warning was issued, as the tremors were not expected to generate significant waves, the agency added.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. The country is also home to 127 active volcanoes, influenced by ongoing tectonic activity. Enditem
