JAKARTA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The central bank of Indonesia has decided to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 5.75 percent, Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Perry Warjiyo announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
Following a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, the board of governors made the decision to keep the interest rates for the lending and deposit facilities at 6.50 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
Warjiyo explained the aim behind maintaining the benchmark interest rate was also in line with pre-emptive and forward-looking steps to guarantee that inflation in the country stays between 1.5 and 3.5 percent.
"It's also to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate in accordance with fundamentals amidst still high global uncertainty, and to help drive economic growth," he added.
He also said that in the future, the central bank will continue to monitor the prospects for inflation and economic growth in utilizing the space for lowering its rate by considering the movement of the rupiah exchange rate. Enditem
