MADRID, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to take control of Gaza and relocate its residents elsewhere for redevelopment.

Sanchez and Sisi made their statements as the Egyptian president paid his second official visit to Spain, where discussions focused on Gaza and bilateral trade.

"Gaza belongs to the Palestinians," Sanchez said, emphasizing that the forced displacement of approximately 2 million people, as proposed by Trump was "against international law and United Nations resolutions."

Sanchez warned that the displacement would have a "destabilizing effect" on both regional and global levels.

He reaffirmed Spain's commitment to a two-state solution and voiced support for an Arab League's proposal -- set to be discussed in Cairo early next month -- for the reconstruction of Gaza.

Sisi expressed gratitude for Spain's stance on recognizing Palestinian rights. "We both agree on the need to rebuild Gaza without the forced displacement of its population," he said. Enditem
