GABORONE, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's education authorities have ordered a temporary closure of schools due to disruptions in student transportation caused by heavy rainfall.
The heavy rains have flooded most roads and cut off some of them, making students unable to travel to and from schools, said Nono Kgafela Mokoka, the minister of child welfare and basic education, on Wednesday.
She said the temporary closure will be in effect from Feb. 20 to Feb. 24, adding that the situation will be monitored and updated further next week.
Botswana has been experiencing heavy rains in the past few days, causing widespread flash flooding across most of the country.
The current rainfall is expected to persist throughout this week and possibly up to the end of February, with rainfall of 50 mm or more likely to continue over the next 24 hours in several parts of the country. Enditem
