MADRID, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Real Sociedad sailed past Danish side Midtjylland with a 5-2 win on Thursday to emerge 7-3 aggregate winners and ensure a place in the UEFA Europa League knockout stages.

The San Sebastian side went ahead after just five minutes when Brais Mendez tapped into an empty net after a horrific error from the Midtjylland defense left him with an open goal.

Luka Sucic doubled the home side's lead soon afterwards after an assist from Ander Barrenetxea, but Barrenetxea gifted the Danish side a penalty in the 24th minute which Adam Buska scored.

Dario Osorio leveled the scores after 38 minutes when Buska controlled a cross to leave him with a simple finish.

Sucic put Real Sociedad back in front on the stroke of halftime with a shot through a crowd of players following a well-worked corner.

Things got a lot easier for Real Sociedad in the 69th minute when Dani Silva was sent off for a high challenge on Igor Zubeldia, and Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty four minutes later after being fouled.

Orri Oskarsson scored the home side's fifth of the night in injury time to book a tie against either Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United.

Paulo Dybala scored twice as Roma beat Porto to book a place in the last 16 with a 4-3 aggregate win.

Spanish forward Samu Aghehowa opened scoring for visiting Porto but two goals from Dybala seized back the lead for the 2023 runners-up. Niccolo Pisilli made it 3-1 for Roma before Devyne Rensch turned into his own net deep into injury time.

Real Betis reached the last 16 of the UEFA Conference League 3-1 on aggregate, but won't be pleased with a 1-0 defeat at home to Gent after another inconsistent performance.
