ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia has introduced its first electronic passport (E-passport), featuring the country's iconic images and aesthetic values, the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) said Friday.
Equipped with an electronic chip, the new passport contains biometric data of individuals, including fingerprints and facial recognition. The locally manufactured passport has also advanced security features to prevent fake information and fraud, ICS said in a statement.
The internal pages of the passport display Ethiopia's cultural and historical landmarks, including Aksum, Gondar, coffee production, rare Ethiopian animals, and other national heritage sites.
The new Ethiopian passport is of superior quality and different in color and design from the previous one produced by a foreign manufacturer, it said.
Unveiling the new passport at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, President Taye Atske Selassie said that the introduction of the electronic passport enhances the nation's image and reflects the respect and importance the country places on its citizens. Enditem
