MINSK, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Belarus has set a new record in electricity consumption in 2024, the country's Energy Minister Alexey Kushnarenko said on Friday.

Belarus' electricity consumption amounted to 43.2 billion KWh in 2024, up by 5 percent, the Minister said.

The official said this was a record figure for Belarus. This allowed Belarus to develop electric transport, electricity supply to the population, and energy-intensive production, he added.

Kushnarenko also said that peak-reserve sources with a capacity of 800 MW were put into operation in 2024 in order to ensure reliable operation of the Belarusian energy system.

Belarus is taking measures to increase electricity consumption and approved a corresponding program. Belarus is also developing electric transport. Opportunities to increase electricity production are associated with the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power station.

The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was put into commercial operation in June 2021, and the second unit in November 2023. Enditem
