BAGHDAD, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi military said on Friday that its forces had destroyed 25 sites used by Islamic State (IS) militants in a mountainous area in northern Iraq.
Forces from Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service carried out an operation in the Makhmour area, some 100 km southeast of Nineveh's provincial capital, Mosul, and destroyed 18 IS hideouts and seven tunnels, according to a statement from the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.
The forces also found human remains, as well as explosive devices, ammunition, two drones, a motorcycle, and other logistical materials, the statement said, without giving further details about the human remains.
While Iraq declared victory over the IS in 2017, remnants of the group continue to carry out attacks against security forces and civilians in urban areas, deserts, and remote regions. Enditem
