GABORONE, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the flooding in Botswana has risen to seven, the country's President Duma Boko announced on Saturday.
Among the deaths recorded so far, three are children, Boko said during a national address, broadcast live through Botswana Television and social media.
He added that the total number of people evacuated has risen to 1749, up from 498 reported on Friday. In addition, Boko highlighted that of the 2994 people affected, 705 are children.
"We will continue to work in the short-term to mitigate further losses," said Boko, adding that his administration will review infrastructure planning to determine whether the country's infrastructure is sufficient to handle both floods and droughts.
He expressed gratitude to citizens and members of various forces, including the police and military, for their heroic efforts in rescuing those affected.
